John was born on October 19, 1929 in Spearfish, SD to Reed and Etta Thompson. He attended North Kitsap High School. He joined the US Army while still in high school and finished his schooling while stationed in Germany during WWII. He also worked in Civil Service and as a member of the "Civ" Club in Kodiak, AK. John was a lifetime member of the Elks and the VFW. Anyone that knew him while he was growing up knew him as, “Bud,” and then once he moved to Kodiak, AK, his coworkers said there were already too many people name, “Bud,” so they started calling him Tommy. And that stuck with him.
Some of his favorite pastimes included boating, camping and hunting in Alaska. As well as traveling the entire United States in a fifth wheel after retiring for seven years. He enjoyed going for drives and finding anything he could tinker around with. John had a green thumb and loved gardening, specializing in tomatoes, garlic and asparagus. When he wasn’t gardening, he enjoyed working with wood and building things. He was always up for a game of cribbage with family or friends or solitaire. John enjoyed his old western movies, which he lovingly called, "Shoot 'em up, bang! Bang!"
