Michael Myers

December 2, 1944 — January 13, 2011

Michael E. Myers died at Harrison Hospital Medical Center on January 13, 2011, from complications of liver failure, after a courageous battle of two and a half years.  He was born to Gretchen and Basil Anthony Myers on December 2, 1944 in Benton Harbor, Michigan.  Michael grew up in Lansing, Michigan, graduating from St. Mary's High School, and Michigan State University.  He also had a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Indiana University.  He had 39 years of dedicated Federal Service, starting at PSNS in July 1968 and transferring to the Naval Torpedo Station, Keyport in 1969 where he retired on August 31, 2007 as a Supervisory Electronics Engineer.  His career spanned several significant events in the history of the DOD but he was most proud of being instrumental in bringing the VAX computer system to Keyport, recruiting at Montana State University, and mentoring the newly hired engineering interns.  Following retirement, he worked part time for AMSEC.   Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John.  Treasuring Michael's memory are his wife of 32 years, Robbi; daughter, Jamie Myers of Tracyton, WA; the stepchildren that his heart claimed as his own:   Kari (Craig) Nickerson of Port Orchard, and Barbara (Jeremy) Landis, of Poulsbo;  Tyler Miller of Port Orchard; four grandsons, Brandon Nickerson of Corvallis, OR, Brent Nickerson of Port Orchard, Cody Thurmond  and Tanner Landis of Poulsbo; his brother, Philip M. (Kathlyn) Myers of Alexandria, VA; sister-in-law, Kathleen Myers of Chapel Hill, NC.; two nieces, Rachel Rys of Northville, MI, and Diana (Joe) Almanza of Chapel Hill, NC;  grandniece Marin, grandnephews Jonathan and James of Chapel Hill, NC.   Michael moved to the Northwest because he fell in love with the mountains.  His interests included hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing in the mountains throughout the Northwest, visiting the national parks, and camping with the entire family at the property in Cle Elum.  He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with Robbi, Jamie and his grandsons through hiking excursions, visiting Yellowstone National Park, and camping trips.  He volunteered as a ranger in the Olympic National Park in his early years.  He loved to travel, especially by train, having made several train trips as a teenager, to visit his brother, Phil, in Ephrata. He took his children and grandsons to Hawaii, Washington D.C., Yellowstone Park, Mt. Rushmore, and Alaska.  One of the last trips that he was able to enjoy was when he flew to London and met Jamie in Paris where they spent a few days sightseeing and returned home together.   He had several horses, one appaloosa that he enjoyed as a trail horse in the mountains.   He was a train buff, computer expert, and owned and operated an electronics repair shop.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, and will be missed by all who knew him. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Pankaj Sharma for the wonderful care he provided to Michael during his illness. There will be a memorial service on Sunday, January 23, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Rill’s Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard.
