Albert George Carpenter was born in Montesano, Washington on May 10, 1932 to Matthew and Inez (Murray) Carpenter. He attended Elma High School and served in the United States Army as an Infantryman. He married Grace Riley in June of 1960 and they were together for 44 years until she preceded him in death in June of 2004.
Al worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Jackson Park Nay Housing as a Master Gardener prior to hiring on with Shop 72 where he worked for the remainder of his 46 years as a federal worker. While working for Shop 72 he became an expert at cleaning oil spills. That was a task he took great pride in and received many awards and commendations for. He was quite a gregarious guy who made quick friends and was well known and well liked.
Al was an avid and eclectic reader. He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, and sports of all kinds including football, baseball and basketball. He truly enjoyed painting with oil and acrylic and his favorite subjects were animals, landscapes and people. HE took the time to learn all of the nautical knots and even became fairly good at macramé in general. He also enjoyed traveling with his very favorite place being Germany.
He had a great sense of humor, and was always upbeat even in his final hours. He loved his job and liked being around people.
Al died at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton on December 15th due to complications of an illness. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Grace, and daughter Linda. He is survived by his daughter Barbara and five grandchildren.
There will be a celebration of Life at Rill’s Life Tribute Center on Monday, January 2nd at 3:00 pm.
