Alfhild Buchmann

May 25, 1914 — January 17, 2010

Alfhild Buchmann died peacefully on January 17, 2010, at Garden Courte Memory Care Center in Olympia.  She was born on May 25, 1914, in Mercer County, North Dakota to Maria and August Stohl.  In 1932, she graduated from Beulah High School and a few years later from Dickenson Teachers College, both of North Dakota.  For the next several years she taught school nearby in a one-room schoolhouse; teaching grades 1-8. On October 18, 1941, she married her long-time sweetheart Albert Buchmann in Shelton, Washington.  They made their home in Port Orchard, Washington where they owned an automobile dealership, until retiring. Alfhild lived in Port Orchard until 2005, when she and her daughter Karen moved to Olympia, to be near Alfhild’s brother George and his family. Alfhild was a charter member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Port Orchard, where she was very active and taught Sunday school for many years.  After moving to Olympia, she became a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Alfhild was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  She enjoyed her flower garden, where you could find her most times in the late afternoons during the spring and summer.  She and her husband Albert were long-time members of the Port Orchard Yacht Club, and they spent many summers vacationing on their boat in the San Juan Islands in British Columbia.  They were also snow-birds spending their winters in Mesa, Arizona. Her husband Albert preceded her in death in 1993.  In addition to her husband, Alfhild was preceded in death by her brother George Stohl of Olympia.  Alfhild is survived by a daughter, Karen Buchmann of Olympia; granddaughter Amy and her husband Isaac Sharrett of Spokane and great-granddaughter Addison Sharrett, also of Spokane, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on January 23, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Rill Chapel, 1151 Mitchell Ave., Port Orchard. A memorial service will be celebrated on January 23, 2010 at 3:00 p.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church, 151 Tremont Street W, Port Orchard. The family requests that you consider a donation to Bethany Lutheran Church of Port Orchard or Messiah Lutheran Church of Olympia.
