Alvie L. Weatherill

February 17, 1920 — September 29, 2015

Alvie L. Weatherill of Port Orchard died of lung cancer while in assisted living at Family First Adult Family Homes in Gig Harbor, on September 29, 2015. He was 95. Alvie was born on February 17, 1920 in Silverton, Oregon to Charles B. and Anna B. (Pfaff) Weatherill. He attended Catholic and public schools in Silverton and completed his high school education in 1938. He met his wife Ruth in Silverton when they were children, they began dating as teenagers and were married on August 9, 1941. During World War II, he served in the Army as a war dog trainer while stationed in Hawaii. Shortly after the war ended, Al and Ruth moved to Kitsap County where he began to work as a fireman at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. After retiring from the shipyard in 1970, he was hired as Port Orchard’s fire chief and served in that position until he retired in the 1980’s.

Alvie enjoyed camping and socializing with family and friends, fishing, hunting – and walking to stay in shape. He was an avid golfer and for many years after retirement, he and Ruth traveled south for the winter in their motor home where he played almost every day, intermittently in Arizona and California. They visited the Grand Canyon and other historic landmark locations during their travels and formed lasting friendships with couples from other parts of the U.S. and Canada.

Alvie was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Celia Smalley, and his wife, who died in 2010. He is survived by sons Leslie (Jay) Weatherill (wife Bobbie) and John B. Weatherill (wife Patricia), and sister-in-law Rita Ryan, whom he raised as his daughter, all of Port Orchard; brother Leslie O. (Buck) Weatherill of Woodburn, OR; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Rill’s Life Tribute Center, 1151 Mitchell Avenue, Port Orchard WA on October 24 2015 at 2:00 pm. An Irish wake is planned and will be held at the Fred Needham Post of the VFW, following the memorial service.
