June VanderStaay (87) passed peacefully at her home in Port Orchard, surrounded by her children, on December 30th.
Beloved by family and friends, June was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and lifelong gardener. She took great joy in her family and in the natural beauty of flowers, forests and Puget Sound.
Born to Otto and Ila Bemp, June grew up on the water near Allyn in North Puget Sound, where she learned to garden and fish. As a teenager she transferred to South Kitsap High School where she met her sweetheart, Nick VanderStaay, to whom she was married for 62 years.
Named “Amelia June” for a brilliant Camellia flower that blossomed at her childhood home, June had vibrant gardens and especially loved dahlias, which she grew in abundance. Even when working and raising a family she always managed to tend and care for flowers.
June worked as a bookkeeper for AT&T and several grocery stores. She had an adventuresome spirit and treasured memories of ocean fishing and winter snowmobile treks she and Nick took across Yellowstone National Park and other wilderness areas. In retirement they enjoyed halibut fishing, traveling in their 5th wheel, and snowbirding with many Port Orchard friends.
June is survived by a loving family: her daughter Darla, and her sons Steve and Scott (and their spouses Mary Janell and Bonnie). Her seven grandchildren are Stephanie, Kevin, Christina, Jessica, Kory, Lily, and Arie. Her five great-grandchildren are London, Saylor, Keely, Everitt and Marlowe.
June's family will honor her with a small, family service.
