Carl E Sanquist

September 4, 1937 — June 24, 2014

Heaven gained an angel in our beloved Carl “Poppy” Sanquist but we hope Heaven knows what it's in for! Poppy leaves his family and friends with an enduring legacy of a love of life and adventure. Poppy made the best of everything in his life, raised four beautiful children, never met a stranger, and was always entertaining. He passed away June 24, 2014 after a short battle with leukemia.

Poppy was born September 4, 1937 in San Francisco, CA where he spent his childhood until he he set out on his first big adventure with the Navy at age 17. He married Sherry Gempler in 1965 and together they raised their children (Carrie, Eric, Trisha, Jason). Sherry preceded him in death in 1982. Poppy worked 30 years as a Pipefitter/Estimator in both Hunters Point & Puget Sound Naval Shipyards.

Carl was lucky enough to find his “Lovey” Claudia “Grammy” Sanquist whom he married in 1987 and together they embraced a blended family, becoming a shining example of grace and unconditional love of family. Together they taught us all what it means to really live life.

After retiring in 1992, he and Lovey traveled the countryside in their RV, snow birding in California. Also spending time at their second home in Ocean Shores where friends and family were always welcome!

His favorite past times included: Monday Trapline with the boyfriends – Silver and Spuz, seeking garage sales and Goodwills wherever they appeared, camping with the family, hikes with Lovey and Pib, bike riding, fishing and hiking with his boys. He loved the whole Pendleton Roundup scene, in which he fully immersed himself every year after his daughter and her family moved to Pendleton.
Most Seahawk Sundays Poppy could be found at the Belfair Eagles serving Homewreckers with his boys. He enjoyed Lake Easton trips, spending time with his kids and attending the grand kids events and activities, making “ho' cakes” and “cackle berries” for the gang on “Big Red” while camping.
He was always up for adventures, something new and fun including a ride in a hot air balloon in Arizona, with Grammy watching from below.

Although he grew up in the city, he tried his hand at farming with cows, horses, bunnies, pigs, and chickens at his home. Not that it always turned out the way he had planned. Stories abound of catching pigs with fishing nets and even a cow in the neighbors' swimming pool.

Our lives and our hearts will never be the same, Poppy will always live within his children Carrie (Travis), Eric (Trina), Trisha (Dan), Jason, and Sharon (Russ) as well as his grandchildren Michael, Alan, Mike, Karlee, Alex, Robert, David, Shelby, Jenna, Alyssa, Luke, and KC, one great-granddaughter, Runa, numerous friends, in-laws and out-laws.

YO POPPY, LET 'ER BUCK! We'll see ya on down the road. Ten Ring.
