The time has come for me to leave this life. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.
-2 Timothy 4:7-8
Carolyn (Caroline) Snitman Powers, age 98, left her earthly home on February 1, 2024 where she resided at Stafford Suites in Port Orchard.
Carolyn was born in 1925 in Fort Barrancas, Florida. Raised in a family of seven children, she spent her childhood on a farm in rural Alabama, later moving to Mobile, Alabama. Her father, a 1904 Russian immigrant, imparted to her a tremendous love of music and life. He also encouraged her and her two sisters to always work hard and honestly, and to learn a skill or trade to support themselves.
Carolyn met her husband, Paul, in Mobile while he was in the Navy, and in 1946 they were married. Leaving her family and everything familiar, she moved across country with the love of her life to Bremerton, later relocating in Port Orchard, their permanent home and community.
Carolyn was a devoted wife and mother, a woman of passion, integrity, and a never- ending thirst for knowledge and personal growth. She, along with her husband, Paul, were truly world changers. Perhaps the word that best describes her is Champion. A champion of others. She loved her family most of all, but after her family, came her love for people and a desire to make a difference in her community and the nation she loved. Thus, she spent most of her life serving in any way she could. Just a few of those were:
Port Orchard City Councilwoman, 26 years
WA State Representative, 26th District 2 years
Olympic College Board of Trustees, 12 years
Kitsap Mental Health Services Board of Directors, 10 years
Admin Secretary, Marcus Whitman Jr. High, 25 years
Soroptimist, Business and Professional Women
South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis
Port Orchard Methodist Church
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband Paul Powers and daughter Cathy Strombom. She is survived by her daughter Deidra Larson and husband Tag, five grandchildren, Lisa Haner of Palm City, Florida, Tanya Larsen of Seattle, Jonathan Stone of Port Orchard, Darren Larson, Bothell and Paul Strombom of New York. Carolyn also has ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 11, 2024 at 1 PM at Sidney Commons, 4885 SW Hovde Rd, Port Orchard.
