Charles Allen Beaird

Charles Allen Beaird, 83, passed away at home in Port Orchard on November 22, 2021, surrounded by his family. Whether you called him “Charlie”, “Allen”, or “Big Al” depended on when and where you met him – you could call him anything so long as you didn’t call him late for dinner.

Charlie was born in Lindale, Texas, to Harold Niblick Beaird and Myrtle Ponder Beaird. He grew up in Tyler, Texas, living large and raising hell. You could take the boy out of Texas, but you could not take Texas out of the boy. After graduating high school, Charlie worked on an oil rig and attended one year at Texas A&M University before joining the U.S. Navy in 1958. Charlie lost his left “pinky” finger on the oil rig, which was a matter of great concern for many a young child who sat in his lap and noticed the missing pinky. There was always a different story as to how the pinky went missing which usually left the child wide-eyed and worried, much to Charlie’s amusement. Charlie loved children and they always loved him. He was best known for his kindness, his sense of humor, and how he loved to flirt with the ladies.

Charlie spent his twenty-year career in the U.S. Navy on submarines as an Electronics Technician and finished college while serving in the military. He met the love of his life, Sachiko, while on leave in San Francisco and his party days came to an end. They married in Reno, Nevada, in 1963 and had two daughters. Charlie loved a road trip and the family drove around most of the Western United States visiting National Parks and traveling to see family in Texas and California. Once on the road, everyone knew there would be no unnecessary stops so the girls were equipped in the back of the truck with a coffee can and a very secure lid. Charlie also loved picnics, nature, and the outdoors. In his younger years, Charlie coached Pee Wee Football and Little League Baseball while stationed in Japan. He also hiked, played beach volleyball, tennis, and joined a bowling league with Sachiko. Everything Charlie did in life, he did with his family in mind.

Together, Charlie and his family were stationed in many ports throughout the Pacific, including ports in California, Washington, Japan, and Hawaii. When Charlie retired from the U.S. Navy in 1978, the family returned to Port Orchard. Charlie went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers for a short time before starting work for Pan Am World Services at Naval Sub Base Bangor as a High Voltage Electrician. He worked for another twenty-five years before retiring in 2005. In retirement, Charlie had plenty of time to spend with his family and enjoy the many bon fires on the Beaird Farm.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Myrtle, and his brothers Harold Ponder “Smoky” Beaird and Samuel Niblick Beaird. He is survived by his loving wife; his daughters (1) Catherine and her husband Scott Oyler, and (2) Carolyn and her husband Tim Renner; his grandchildren (1) Alicia Cox and her husband Michael, (2) Joshua Oyler and his wife Kelsey, (3) Elijah Oyler and his wife Edinora, (4) Austin Renner and (5) Grace Renner; his great-grandchilden (1) Donny Cox, (2) Keilanna Cox, (3) Dennis Oyler, (4) Kristina Oyler, (5) Ail’is Oyler, (6) Elena Oyler, and (7) Leilani Oyler; and his many nieces and nephews in California, Hawaii, Idaho and Texas.
