The world lost an extraordinary human being with the passing of Christopher R. Devine, a man of faith, integrity and generosity. Chris lived his life for other people, always thinking of others before himself. Nothing demonstrated this more than his devotion to the love of his life, his wife Sara, and to the care and concern for his mother, Joan Devine.
Born on June 23, 1968 in San Rafael California and raised in Aberdeen, Washington, Chris graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1986. He would always say that his claim to fame was attending high school with Curt Cobain of Nirvana.
Chris met his future wife, Sara Landstad, in 1987 while attending an event with their respective families. It only took one more meeting for them to realize that there was something special between them. That “something special” quickly turned into the great love that led to their engagement in December of 1989 and their marriage in August of 1991. During the 24 years they spent together Chris and Sara developed innumerable friendships. Chris was an inspiration to all of his friends, and they are all better for knowing him.
Chris loved life. He loved his God, his family, his friends and spending time outdoors, especially at the beach. He enjoyed camping and taking genealogical trips to Kentucky and loved Disneyland. His favorite pastimes were hanging out with Sara and with family and friends, golfing and gaming.
Chris used his computer programming training and his MBA as a data programmer/analyst, most recently working for Swedish/Providence Health& Services. As a past-president of the board of directors for Helping Hand House, an organization dedicated to ending family homelessness, Chris once again demonstrated his compassion for others.
Chris passed away on December 29, 2015 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Sara Devine, his mother Joan Devine, and brother-in-law Pete Landstad. He is also survived by brothers Barry (Charlene), Patrick, Tadd (Karen), Darryl (Donna), sisters Pam and Diane, and numerous nephews, nieces and great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Devine and grandmother Margaret Devine. He also leaves behind his best friend Jim O’Neall and his wife Kara and their children, Taryn and Brett, Chris’s beloved godchildren.
Services in celebration of Chris’s life will be held on Monday, January 11th at 1:00 pm at Rill Life Tribute Center, 1151 Mitchell Ave., Port Orchard, WA 98366. Memorials to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance or to CaringBridge are encouraged.
“Never Give Up” was Chris’s motto. He lived it his entire life, and although he battled cancer for the third time in 20+ years, he fought to the end. Chris would remind us all not to cry for him but to go forward, to take care of each other and to love one another the way he always did.
