Clarence Ray Mullenix, 91, of Port Orchard died Monday Feb. 2, 2009 at his home. Clarence was born Sept. 28, 1917 in Port Orchard to Ray and Emma (Damer) Mullenix. He attended school in the South Kitsap area and never married. During WWII he was excused from service because he was needed to help with the family dairy which supplied milk to the shipyard. As a farmer he enjoyed cutting and baling hay for local folks. For a time he picked and sold wild huckleberries. He was also a successful brush picker and liked to tell of his adventures out in the woods like getting much too close to a bear and the time someone mistakenly shot at him because they might have thought he was a bear. When he was young, Clarence attended the Bethel Church that his grandfather helped found in 1900. He enjoyed listening to Billy Graham preach and the singing of George Beverly Shea. He loved being outdoors and working hard! He was great at fixing things and making them last as long as possible. Clarence enjoyed going to swap meets and looking for useful bargains. He liked antique cars, especially Model T's. He was blessed with a super sharp memory and loved telling everyone his stories about life in Port Orchard before WWII. We will miss this true pioneer. Clarence is preceded in death by a sister Ellen Weathers. Survivors include his twin brother Lawrence Mullinex of Purdy, WA, his niece Marian Burger, nephew Bruce Weathers, Jr. and special friends Randy and Debbie Raub of Burley. At his request there will be no public service. Burial will be at the Bethel Cemetery with his family and other pioneers of Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Rill's Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard.
