Corazon Florendo Tabafunda, age 90, passed away peacefully in her home on September 30, 2022. She was born on November 6, 1931, in the Philippines to Asuncion and Benita Florendo. She dropped out of school after the 6th grade to help support her family. She worked in a factory in Manila where she was a piece seamstress. In 1962 she met Bernardo Tabafunda, married him two weeks later and left behind the only life she knew to start a new one in the United States. Corazon and Bernardo were happily married for almost forty years before Bernardo’s passing in 2001. She missed him dearly until the day she was able to join him again.
Corazon lived in Silverdale, Washington for 30 years where she stayed very busy. She resumed her work as a piece seamstress at the Days, Inc. Factory and C.C. Filson Factory in Bremerton, and helped maintain their family farm in Silverdale, where they locally sold berries, vegetables, and flowers; raised their son Edgar and daughter Nora; and also helped take care of other live-in family members. She was a Charter Member of the Port Orchard Farmer’s Market where she sold her flowers, fruits, and vegetables every Saturday from May to October until she retired in 2002. In 1992 they built and moved into their forever dream home in Port Orchard, Washington. She lived there for an additional 30 years where she worked in her beautiful garden and was surrounded by family and friends.
Although Corazon was a quiet and shy woman, she loved to have people around. She was affectionately called “Lola” by many, which means Grandma in her Filipino culture. She was an amazing cook/baker and showed her love through her cooking. One of the things she could often be heard saying is, “Come, come, you eat now!!” The recipes for her lumpia, cascaron, macaroni salad, and zucchini bread were highly sought after, but she kept in her heart.
Corazon is survived by her daughter Nora, her son Edgar, his wife Shawn and her granddaughter Nikki, however, her love didn’t stop there, she is also survived by many official and honorary nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that she loved as if they were her own. You will always be loved and remembered Lola!!
