Dan was a man who believed in serving. He believed in the words of JFK “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country”. He also tried to live by the Rotary Four-Way Test of the things we say or do: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
He served his family with love, loyalty and great dedication. He served his nation in the army for 29 years retiring in 1995 as a colonel. He served two tours in Vietnam where he received four Bronze Stars with valor, the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross medal with bronze star, and the Vietnam Service medal.
He served his community of Port Orchard volunteering with the South Kitsap Rotary Club, Port Orchard United Methodist Church, Helpline and reading to the kindergarteners at East Port Orchard Elementary School. He also helped build the Etta Turner Park with South Kitsap Rotary Club. He served the world by helping the Rotary eradicate polio and other world problems.
He loved to travel, growing dahlias and gardening, collecting stamps, reading, and being with family, wife, three children, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and his younger sister.
