David Joseph Mckay

February 20, 1957 — October 21, 2023

David Joseph McKay, known to family and fiends as “Dave”, passed away October 21st, 2023 at the Washington Veteran’s Home, Port Orchard, Washington. He was 66 years old.

Dave was born on February 20, 1957 in Chambley AFB, France. He was the fourth child of Walter John McKay and Anna Marcella (Malonis) McKay. He is descended from Lithuanian immigrants. The McKay surname was originally Marcinkevicus.

In May of 1959, the family returned to the United States. Dave’s father was now stationed at George AFB in Victorville, California. Dave graduated Victor Valley High School in 1975. He then attended the community college in Victorville.

He began his 20-year career in the Navy on February 8, 1977. He served on nuclear powered attack submarines as a Sonar Technician. Dave received excellent evaluations; comments were that he was highly professional, thorough and first-rate. He received citations for his performance, including the Navy Achievement Medal “for professional achievement in the superior performance of his duties while serving as a Sonar Supervisor.”

While stationed in Hawaii he supported two of his Navy cohorts in the start up of a Machine Embroidery business. The hotels in Hawaii used the business to embroider robes and towels. The wife of the couple had retired from the Navy and her husband followed soon after and the business was moved to their home town, Bremerton, Washington. Once Dave retired from the Navy in September 1996, he followed them to Bremerton. He worked with them in this business until he could no longer physically function (the work required setting up and running machines in a standing position).

After his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1998, he lived independently until 2010. He made the Washington Veterans Home his residence in 2013 and remained there until he passed in 2023.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings-Walter, Christine and Daniel and nephew Michael. He is survived by his sister Linda (McKay) with Robert Kelly, Vancouver, Washington and his brother Vincent with Laura McKay, Wrightwood, California. In addition, he leaves nephews and nieces: Patrick Kelly, Kathleen (Kelly) Pursell; Jonathan Kelly, Dani (McKay) Hearrell, and Hannah (McKay) Hutton. His final resting place will be at the Veterans Home Cemetery, 901 Olney Rd., Port Orchard, Washington. He is scheduled for interment on November 7, 2023.
