Dean Tyree

June 20, 1946 — March 11, 2023

Dean Tyree, age 76, passed away March 11, 2023, with his wife, Katy Tyree, by his side.
Born in Brawley, California, on June 20, 1946, his family moved to Bakersfield, CA, in time to start kindergarten at Standard School. He still had friends he loved at the time of his death from Standard School, North High School and other Bakersfield high schools, as well as a friend born at the same time in Brawley, CA.

Dean grew up playing ball and was an athlete in his youth, playing baseball, football and basketball at Standard School and North High, getting a full-ride scholarship to Utah State for football and baseball.

After receiving a degree in econometrics, Dean started his career with IBM. He continued in the technology field for 40 years, with the last 15 years having his own information technology project management consulting business, consulting to fortune 500 companies.

Friends near and far would tell you his favorite baseball team was the Los Angeles Dodgers and his favorite color was Dodger blue. To encourage his son and other young men, Dean coached youth baseball teams with great joy.

Dean had a keen intellect and was a great conversationalist, was a baseball history buff and a lover of geography, horror movies and music. Dean had a strong faith life, baptized in the Roman Catholic Church in 1985.

The family has been primarily in Washington State since 1984, yet from the early 70’s Dean and Katy had called Long Beach, CA, Bakersfield, CA, Bellevue, WA, Naperville, IL, Redmond, WA and Port Orchard, WA their home. Dean was a loving and proud father to Carrie and Matt: their happiness was his happiness. He delighted at the birth of his granddaughters Maggie and Greta and was tickled to be with them and get calls from them as adults. Dean loved spending time with his extended family, his two sisters and brothers-in-laws, his nieces and nephew, as well as Katy’s large extended family of siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dean and Katy spent their honeymoon 48 years ago in Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, and continued to take their family back to Incline Village for wonderful vacation times. Katy and Dean took annual trips to Incline in the last 15 years, like a second home. Friends from his Bakersfield schools joined Dean in Incline, with and without Katy, so many times, they became known as the “Tahoe Boys”.

Tragically, Dean was preceded in death by his and Katy’s beloved son, Matthew Dean Tyree, by his loving parents, Art and Marie Tyree, and his sister Donna Anderson. He is survived by his wife Katy Tyree, his daughter, Carrie Tevlin and her husband Dennis of Seattle, granddaughters Maggie Yarrow Grae and Greta Marie Clogston, sister Jan and husband Ray Scudder, brother-in-law Charlie Anderson, nieces Pam Lackey (Mike), Terri Berry, Staci Galovic (Dan), Michelle Scudder, and Jennee Scudder-Astle and grand nieces and nephews and their children.

Funeral Mass is March 31, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Nicholas Catholic Church at 3510 Rosedale St. NW, Gig Harbor with reception to follow at the Gig Harbor Yacht Club at 8209 Stinson Ave., Gig Harbor.
