Donald Albert Ballard

Donald Albert Ballard, 67, passed away on January 16, 2023 at St Anthony’s hospital in Gig Harbor from ALS complications. His wife, daughter, and son were by his side when he passed peacefully. Don was born on January 9, 1956 in Bellingham, WA. The son of Herbert and Beatrice Ballard, Don graduated from Bellingham High School, class of 1974. He attended Washington State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, class of 1979. After graduating, Don began working as an engineer for Boeing. That same year, he married college sweetheart, Terri L. Washer on September 8, 1979. After his wife’s MS diagnosis in 1984, he became a longtime supporter of the Swank MS foundation. In 1989 Don and family attended the Evergreen State Fair (ESF) for the first time. Over the years Don actively supported and entered in the open class contests including his crochet, needlework, and canning; attending the fair every year until his death. In 2003 Don joined the ESF fair board and was the 2019 ESF honoree. Don began his years of service to the 4-H program after both children joined the Snohomish County 4-H program in 1994. Don became 4-H rabbit program fair superintendent in 2000, serving in this role for 23 years. Throughout his service to the 4-H community, Don held leadership roles at both the state and local level. He was truly a part of a greater 4-H family, where he impacted the lives of so many youth members. Don also worked tirelessly as the treasurer for the Northwest Rabbit Breeders Association for many years, and always went the extra mile when there was a youth activity that he could contribute to. After retiring from Boeing in 2014 where he worked for 35 years, he was able to further explore his love of travel with numerous cruises and trips with family & friends. He was also able to dedicate more of his time and energy to 4-H. Don will be remembered by many as a mentor, friend, and unwavering advocate for youth.
He is survived by his wife Terri Ballard; daughter Anna Wilson [Derreck Wilson], and son Doug Ballard [Ryan Dekowski]; Grandchildren Cody and Brendan Wilson; Brothers Robert and Thomas Ballard; many nieces and nephews, and countless youth.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday January 27 at 11am, with an open visitation beginning at 10am, at St Mary Magdalen Catholic Parish; 8517 7th Ave SE, Everett, WA 9208. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Snohomish County 4-H rabbit program, the Swank MS Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
