On December 22, 2022 Donald Bruce McDonald passed away at St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor from complications of kidney failure and pneumonia. Don was born in Hono-lulu, HI on December 7, 1939 to John and Leta McDonald. As the son of a U.S. Navy sailor, he spent his childhood in many locations finally settling down in Southern California. He attended Oxnard High where he played football and basketball. After graduating in 1958, Don attended Ventura Community College and then decided to join the Navy. While training as an electrician he met Viola Elizabeth Synkelma in Libertyville, IL. They were married, moved a few times then finally ended up in Long Beach, CA. After serving 8 years for his country, Don and Vi moved to Kitsap County working for both Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Submarine Base Bangor as a high voltage electrician. Don spent a tremendous amount of his time volunteering for his community. He coached youth football, basketball and baseball as well as serving many leadership positions including president of South Kitsap West Pee Wee's. After his retirement, Don was active in the W.S.U. Master Gardener Program and started Peninsula Fruit Club which still thrives today. Don is preceded in death by both of his parents, his wife Viola and many memorable family dogs. Survivors include daughter, Debbie (John) Howie, son Brian McDonald and son David (Susan) McDonald; brothers John, Harold, Robert; and sister Judy. A celebration of life will be held on December 29, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.
