Donald Mckay

October 12, 1955 — January 17, 2008

Donald E. McKay, 53, died at his home in Port Orchard on January 17, 2008 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born October 12, 1955 in San Francisco CA. In 1979 he married his wife Cathy and they raised four children, all of whom reside in the Port Orchard area. Don and his wife moved to Port Orchard in 1988 and he began working in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning trade. After working in the private industry for many years, he became a union man in 2005, working in Tacoma and Puyallup. Don graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1975 and took various classes at Olympic College in Bremerton and College of Marin in California. He was interested in photography from an early age and was just beginning a new love for the digital age in photography. Don's great love was spending time with his Lord. He loved to read about leadership and Christian history, had a large collection of books and teaching videos. He and his wife attended First Christian Church in Port Orchard. His favorite pastime was spending a quiet afternoon at home with his wife, a good book and a cup of tea, the football game on in the background, and their small dog, Lolo. He was a quiet and simple man, a loyal friend, and incredible husband and father. He will be missed by many people, as he touched so many lives with his servant's heart. Don spent much of his life working as a volunteer. He had a love for missionary work and spent many years working along side his wife and children going into other countries and states, serving the poor. He also had a love for cooking and spent many years volunteering his cooking services to various ministries. Don loved people and had a desire to see them live healthy lives emotionally. In 2002, he and his wife did extensive training in the area of one-on-one counseling and teaching and Don spent the years following working with men and youth, listening and helping where he could. People were drawn to Don because of his listening ear and encouraging words. He never said unkind words about anyone and always looked for the potential and positive. Surviving are his wife Cathy; daughters Sara (Jonathan) and Julie; sons Donny (Samantha) and Aaron; grandchildren Ellianna, Gannon, Morgan & Daniel; & brother Gary. A Memorial will be at First Christian Church, 4885 SW Hovde Rd, in Port Orchard (360-876-8172) at 5:00 pm on Sunday, January 27th. It will be a BBQ Potluck, at Don's request. The family will privately spread Don's ashes at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial funds to help support his wife during this difficult transition. Funds can be sent to First Christian Chruch, 4885 SW Hovde Road, Port Orchard WA 98367.
