Dorothy Elizabeth Culley passed away peacefully on February 9, 2017 in Poulsbo, WA. Dorothy was born on January 10, 1927 in Seattle to Ruth June Parker and Leslie Ross Smith. She had 5 brothers; Kenneth Smith, Earl Smith, Robert Smith, Jack Earhart and Michael Earhart. Most of Dorothy’s childhood years were during the height of the great depression. As a result she learned the value of thrift and hard work. These qualities became an inherent part of her life. She lived most of her childhood in Port Orchard and Bremerton.
She met her true love, Daniel Culley--a sailor in the United States Navy stationed in Bremerton when she was 19 years old. He soon proclaimed her “the sweetest gal in the world.” You can imagine his reaction when she finally agreed to marry him.
Daniel and Dorothy were married on June 7, 1947. They made their home in Port Orchard and raised 6 children who were loved and cherished beyond measure. Dorothy was a devoted mother in every way. She used the habits of thrift and hard work to not only make ends meet but to provide a loving home environment for her family.
As the children were growing up, Dorothy was always active right along with them in their endeavors as PTA president, cub scout den leader, supporter and organizer for the little league baseball teams and all around authentic cheerleader! She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was involved in church functions with her family. She served in the church in many areas. Dorothy had a way to make those around her feel comfortable, valued and important. They knew that they could count on her when she agreed to do something. Her family knew this as well. She spent her early parenting years teaching her children the value of thrift and hard work in fun and memorable ways. Blackberry picking followed by ice cold root beer, fishing outings to the lake during spring break, and homemade meals followed by dish-washing, were just a few of the memories she helped to create for her children.
After 25 years of marriage, Daniel and Dorothy decided to become foster parents and also set up a daycare in a warm, inviting environment. Many children were blessed to be taught, loved and cared for in her home and throughout the years have kept in touch with her, re-affirming her important influence.
Dorothy had many talents and interests. She loved to sew and knit and spent many hours creating handmade gifts for her family and friends. This brought her incredible joy. She also loved to garden, not only growing fruit and vegetables to provide for her family, but to beautify her home and yard. She truly had a green thumb! Dorothy enjoyed cooking for those around her and often shared with others. Through her generosity and love, she became a friend to many. Her loving ways will be missed by all who knew her.
Dorothy was blessed with 3 sons, Aaron, Brant and Gordon; as well as 3 daughters, Dorothy (Dotti), Heather and Hollie. In addition, she is a grandmother to 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
This beautiful daughter of God lived a full and happy life—she will be missed by all.
