Port Orchard resident Dorris Mae McGuire, 77, died February 20, 2003, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle from a brain aneurysm.She was born November 30, 1925, in Woodpecker/Hixon, B.C., Canada to Earl & Ethel Bate. She graduated from Moore, ID, High School in 1943. Her family had moved to the Big Lost River Valley in Idaho in November 1941.At high school, she met Charles Emerson McGuire. They married in May 1943. The family moved to Port Orchard in 1954. In 1960 Dorris worked at the Kitsap County Bank as a bookkeeper. In the mid 1960's she began working at the Naval Torpedo Station, Keyport. She transferred to the Naval Supply Center, Code 200, as a Procurement Agent in 1966. She stopped work temporarily in 1973. She worked from 1977 to 1980 at the Manchester Fuel Depot. Dorris then stopped working to take care of grandchildren. She officially retired in 1985.She had life long interests in music, family, and writing family history. She was a devoted member of the LDS church, starting in Port Orchard when the church was a branch. She belonged to the local Elizabeth Ellington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She was a member of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers District 5 since 1973. She played fiddle, mandolin and sang. She entertained at six nursing homes per month.Survivors include her husband; a brother, Ronald Bate and his wife Lorraine of Idaho Falls, ID; a daughter, Roxy Scott and her husband Robert of Port Orchard; three grandchildren, Larissa Lykins, Sean Boyd, and Jeremy Boyd; and four great granddaughters, Chloe Lykins, Reigna & Seana Boyd, and Blaike Boyd.She was preceded in death by three sisters, Rula Empy, Bessie Billman Lurus, and Alice Miller; and one brother Harvey Bate.Viewing will be Wednesday, February 26th at Rill Chapel from 10:00AM-5:00PM. Graveside services will be Thursday at 10:00AM at Sunset Lane Cemetery with a Memorial Service following at 11:15AM at the LDS Stake Center on Mullinex Road in Port Orchard.Dorris donated her organs so that others might live. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Great Peninsula Conservancy, 3721 Kitsap Way, Suite 5, Bremerton, Wa 98312, stewardship fund in memory of Dorris McGuire for the preservation of wildlife sanctuaries.
