Ellen L. (Knight) Palmer passed away on Wednesday, September 7, one day before her 76th birthday, at Ridgemont Terrace Convalescent Center in Port Orchard, after a long battle with breast cancer. Ellen was born on September 8, 1929 in Glendive, Montana to Edgar L. and Sylvia V. (Reece) Knight. She spent her early childhood in Montana. The family moved to Washington State in 1937, eventually to the Hood Canal area in 1941. She attended junior high in Shelton and high school at South Kitsap HS, graduating in 1948. She met William (Bill) Palmer when he was in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Bremerton. They were married in June 1948 and made their first home in San Diego, CA and then on the east coast. They returned to Washington, moving to Belfair in the summer of 1958 and lived there until moving to Shelton in 1978 to take care of Ellen?s father, after her mother passed away. Ellen lived in Shelton with her husband, Bill, until he suffered a major heart attack in 1987 and passed away. She then moved to Port Orchard where she lived until her death. Ellen enjoyed crafting, especially Tole and decorative painting; she liked to bowl and bowled on several leagues both in Bremerton and Shelton; Ellen and Bill like to square dance and were members of the Salty Sashayers in Shelton; played golf; liked to camp, fish and travel; she was a past member of the Belfair Fire Department Auxiliary. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Pearl Knight, a brother Donald Knight, and her husband William (Bill) Palmer. Ellen is survived by a son George W. Palmer; a daughter Cheryl French and husband Mike of Belfair; a sister Darlene Heard of Bremerton; 5 grandchildren Melissa (Palmer) Yeisley and husband Mike of Key Center, Michelle (French) Kane and husband Joseph of Fort Hood, Texas, Brandon Palmer of Belfair, Brant Palmer and Zachary Palmer of Montana; 5 great-grandchildren Mikayla, Daniel, Morgan, Dylan and Brendan; several nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 10 at Belfair Assembly of God Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Kitsap County, or a charity of your choice. Interment will take place at Shelton Memorial Park.
