Ellie C. "Babe" Newland, a Port Orchard resident for 60 years, died at Ridgemont Terrace March 13, 2004. She was 92. She was born June 19, 1911 in Stanton, Nebraska to Peter and Anna (Neilsen) Beck. Ellie married Gerald K. Newland January 6, 1933 in Huron, South Dakota. She graduated from Huron High School in Huron, South Dakota. Ellie worked as a cook at Pilgrim Firs Church Camp for over 13 years. She belonged to the Waterman Circle group at Elim Luthern Church, attended the Kitsap County Homemakers Association; was an avid reader - especially autobiographies; enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk; belonged to the Givens Senior Citizens Group and participated in their outtings; loved to travel when her husband was alive. Ellie was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard. She is survived by son - Gerald L. Newland (& wife, Ann) of Port Orchard; numerous nieces and nephews; 2 grandchildren (Kim L. Carr & husband Rick of Battle Creek, MI, Lance M. Newland & wife, Barbara of Port Orchard; 4 great-grandchildren (Natalia Carr, Jennifer Smith, Amy Achilles, Katheryn Achilles. She was preceded in death by: husband - Gerald K. Newland, 3 brothers (Karl, Kai, Knute) and 2 sisters (Ellen and Elsie). A Memorial service will be held at Elim Lutheran Church, Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at 11:00AM followed by a luncheon. Inurnment will be held at Sunset Lane Memorial Park.
