Emma Geier Cookus (97) was born in Worden, Montana in 1917, to emigrant Germans from Russia parents (George Geier and Catherine Younger Geier). Youngest of eight siblings, her family settled in Lincoln, Nebraska after many seasons of migrant work throughout the middle west. She attended Lincoln public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School. Emma married Jake Weisgerber and they had three children Laurence, and twins Melvin and Mildred. Moving to Seattle, Washington in 1962 Emma met and married Joe Cookus of Port Orchard and moved to his home on Beaver Creek Rd.
Emma was active at Elim Lutheran Church, and in the area retired Naval community before Joe's death in 1980. She was a lifetime member of American Society of Germans from Russia, joining at it's inception. She enjoyed traveling to many of the society conventions when she was able. She enjoyed making traditional family recipes and the company of many lady friends who often gathered in her home to play cards and giggle.
During Emma's working life, she had been employed at Russell Stover Chocolates as a chocolate packer. She also helped in a family floral shop in Lincoln and had a wedding flower business for a small clientele in Port Orchard.
Emma resided at Ridgemont Terrace for many years and is survived by 1 sister, Molly, 1 son, Melvin Weisgerber, his wife Sally, and daughter-in-law Colleen Weisgerber.
There are grandchildren and great grandchildren all of whom reside in Arizona.
