Ernest (Ernie) Schramm, age 96, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on July 29, 2021. Ernie was born in Sturgis, South Dakota on June 25th,1925. His parents, Reinhold & Anna Schramm had 7 children: Lee, John, Lethe, Lesetta, Harold, Lloyd and Ernie. In the thirties, Ernie moved with his family to Kent. After graduating from Kent High School, Ernie enlisted in the navy to fight in WWII. He loved our country and was a very patriotic man.
After the war, he married Marguerite Long and had 3 children. Ernie started working at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) in 1947 as a shipfitter helper. He retired as a engineer technician. After retiring from PSNS he worked at Mission Creek Youth Camp in the maintenance department. His last position was at Sars Market.
Ernie was a long time member of Harper Evangelical Free Church. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the unborn and fought vigorously for those rights. He loved being around his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also loved to attend the reunions of the USS St Lo CVE 64 on which he served. Ernie was a volunteer at Silverdale Elementary where Linda was a teacher. As part of the TEAM Program, he work with students in Reading, History and Math. Being with the children and helping them gave him joy. He enjoyed inventing things; roller skating, fishing, volksmarching, and working on cars. He spent many hours working with his son on refurbishing a 1951 Chevrolet Pickup.
He is survived by his three children: Linda Sommer (Don), Chris Schramm (Lisa), Peg Gillard (Tom); 7 grandchildren; Amie Huff (Matt), Ryan Sommer (Melissa), AlexTalkington (Josh), Adam Schramm, Nate Gillard (Sara), Brett Gillard (Jessica) and Nick Gillard; and 7 great grand children: Alivia and Ryan Huff, Savannah Talkington, and Mathew and Miriam Gillard. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; and grandchild: Nicole Gillard.
