Eugene Anthony Dueber Jr. Lt. Col. Ret. USMC Naval Academy Class of 1940, of Manchester, WA, passed away Thursday afternoon April 26th 2012, surrounded by his family and friends. Eugene was born May 16, 1916 in Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his daughter Dorothy, sons Eugene III and Peter; grandchildren Christina Maloney , Kelly Dueber , Ethan Dueber, Ben Beauvais, Joe Beauvais and 8 great grandchildren, and sister Dolores Stevens. After attending Columbia Prep (Oregon) and the Naval Academy (Annapolis), Gene was commissioned in the Marine Corps and was soon posted to the 1st Marine Division where he landed on Guadalcanal and served in subsequent campaigns in the Solomon Islands during WWII. Again during the Korean War he served with the 1st Marines and later a number of postings on both coasts finishing his illustrious military career at the Pentagon. After retiring from the Corps he continued on a lifelong quest for knowledge on an incredibly broad scale including archaeology, history, opera, Italian, Boy Scouting, art history and numerous other interests. His real passion however was breeding and training Holsteiner dressage horses which he pursued almost to his passing at almost 96. He was a much loved character by the horse world and all those he touched. His long life, service and experiences qualify him as one of “The Few”, we will not see his kind again. A mass will be held in the near future at St. Gabriel’s Church in Port Orchard. A Celebration of his Life will be held for family and friends as yet to be determined. His ashes will be interred in the Mt. Cavalry Cemetery in Portland Oregon, alongside his wife and other family members. He requested and will have a Military send off.
