Eunice was born to John A. Moen and Thea Solseth Moen on February 7, 1916, in Lignite, North Dakota. Eunice was the 4th child born into her family of 6 brothers and 3 sisters.
She grew up on the family farm and told of shucking wheat out in the fields with her siblings. They didn’t have shoes in the summer, so their feet were tough; but, because the wheat stubble was sharp, she remembered just how painful that job was.
Eunice moved from the farm into town where she lived so she could attend high school. She not only became the only high school graduate in the family, but was on the State Championship girl’s basketball team in 1933. She was very proud of this accomplishment and two months before her death she could still name her team mates.
In 1936 when Eunice was 20 years old she married Muriel Larson in Lignite, North (Dakota. In 1940 they moved to Kitsap County and were either preceded or followed by all nine of her siblings and her parents. This made for a wonderful, close family support system, huge holiday parties and family picnics.
In 1943 Muriel, Eunice, and their first 3 children, (Wahnyce, Gayle and Max) moved into a very small house on California Ave. In the beginning there was no indoor plumbing, they cut their own trees for wood heat, raised chickens, rabbits, goats, and tended vegetable gardens. Eunice’s forth child Leon (Tag) was born here in 1949. This was still Eunice’s home when she passed away 71 years after moving in.
Even though Muriel had a good job on the county road crew, money was tight with four children. Eunice never being afraid of hard work took on part time jobs. She worked at Myhre’s Restaurant, in Port Orchard and even picked oysters out in Purdy.
Eunice’s greatest joy was spending time with family and especially with her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing whiffle ball, and blowing bubbles with them outside. She kept a closet full of toys in her living room that was still being enjoyed by her great grandchildren until her passing.
Eunice and her children were active in the First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed team bowling for many years, took various art classes, tried her hand at painting, belonged to a Homemakers club and took bus tours traveling around the country.
On June 16, 2014, Eunice went to meet Jesus face to face and once again enjoy the company of her husband Muriel, her parents, her siblings, her grandson Derek, and her son-in-law Walt who have all preceded her in death.
We will cherish her memory and we are honored and grateful that she is in our future.
Eunice is survived by children Wahnyce (John), Gayle (Walt), Max (Gaye) & Tag (Deidra); grandchildren Aaron (Susan), Teri (Steve), Marlo, Lisa (Joi), Marta, Jeri (Rob), Annieca, Tanya (Steve), Darren (Kelly), Jonathon (Sara); great-grandchildren Ethan, Jason, Kali, Grace, Evan, Kristin, Breanna, Jakob, Jacob, Brian, Caleb, Sophia, Alexandria, Andrea, Bethany, Benjamin, Zechariah, Kala, Ellianna, Dawson, Morgan, Dimetrio, Daniel, Diego; and 2 great-great grandchildren Zachary & Ayden.
