Francis Rutherford

Francis C. Rutherford, 92 of Port Orchard, died Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Hospice Care Center in Bremerton.  Francis was born March 23, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Francis and Elva (Roberts) Rutherford.  He graduated from high school in Santa Monica, CA in 1935, received his Bachelor's Degree from UCLA in 1940 and completed the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI. in 1960.  He married Dorothea Campbell March 15, 1947 in Oklahoma City, OK.  She preceded him in death in 2000.  Francis entered the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served as a Naval Supply Officer, retiring as a Commander in 1963.  He worked as Kitsap County Assessor until 1982.  He enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden Foundation.  He was preceded in death by a brother Whitley Rutherford and a sister Roma Cockins.  At his request there will be no public service.  Scattering at sea will be by the U.S. Navy.  Memorial donations may be made to the Rhododendron Species Foundation, P.O.
