Frank Albert Baillie, Jr.

June 1, 1928 — March 14, 2016

Port Orchard, WA resident for 43 years, Lt. Frank A. Baillie Jr. (Ret.), passed away on March 14, 2016. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley (Lundy) and his son Bill. He was survived by his sons, Bruce Baillie and Mark Baillie, daughter Jennie Johnstone, 7 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A Navy weatherman for 27 years of service, retiring in 1973. He served overseas at Naval Base Guam; U.S. Marine Air Station in Tsingtao, China; Naval Base Yokosuka, Japan; NAS Keflavik, Iceland; and NAS Rota, Spain. Stateside he served in NAS Lakehurst, NJ; NAS North Island, San Diego, CA; NAS Whiting Field, Pensacola, FL; NAS Brunswick, ME. Sea duty included two tours each aboard the amphibious command ships, USS Estes (AGC-12) and the USS Eldorado (AGC-11) in China and the Korean War; Ocean Station Vessel PCE-885; and the USS Wright (CC-2), the national emergency command ship afloat out of Norfolk, VA. While stationed aboard the USS Estes in November 1952, he took part in "Operation Ivy," the first hydrogen bomb test at Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands of the South Pacific.

Following Frank's retirement from the Navy, he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank, Seattle, WA, retiring again in 1983.

He was a lifetime member of the Naval Weather Service Association; the Military Officer's Association; the China Marine Association; the Fleet Reserve Association; and the founder of the Northwest Chapter of the NWSA in 1992. Frank wrote a column for the NWSA newsletter, "Aerograph" until stopping for health reasons. Frank was an avid Seattle Mariner and Seattle Seahawks fan and attended many a ballgame in his lifetime.
