George Stansgar

George J. Stansgar, 84, died peacefully at his home in Bremerton on May 5, 2009.  He was born September 9, 1924 in Meadowlake, ID to Edward & Johanna Stensgar.  He graduated from Chemawa Indian School in Salem, OR in 1942.  He married Donna Dew on November 14, 1965 in Bremerton.  She preceded him in death in 2001. George worked as a Welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton for 30 years, retiring in 1990.  He served as an E-5 in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945 aboard the USS St. George during WWII. George loved his children & grandchildren.  He also loved camping, clam digging, deer hunting, fishing, golf, and visiting the Colville reservation.   He was an avid bowler, loved his Mariners, traveling in his 5th wheel and telling stories of his Indian life & ways.  He loved beating his opponents in a good game of scrabble, cribbage or pool and loved a good clean joke. Surviving are sons George A. (Vikki) Stansgar of Ridgefield, WA, James E. (Monica) Stansgar of Port Orchard, Carleton D. (Debby) Adams of Bremerton & Carl B. Adams of Port Orchard; daughter Deborah J. (Garel) Adams-White of Lakewood, WA; grandchildren Gary, Gerry, Gina, Michelle, Sherry, Brett, Jolyn, Aaron, Rhiannon, Joshuah, Amy, Sarah, Robert, Rocky, Ryan, Izaak, Kailey, Trintin, James, Nathan; & 31 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by sons Michael & Mark Adams and great-grandson Alijah Tate. Graveside service at 1:00pm on Friday, May 15th at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard followed by a Celebration of Life at Givens Community Center, also in Port Orchard.
