Harold Tomkins

LCDR Harold L. "Tommy" Tomkins, USN (Retired), 78, of Port Orchard, WA, died Friday, January 2, 2004, at his home. He was born November 16, 1925, in Buena Vista, CO, to Ernest and Dorothy (Hamerich) Tomkins. Mr. Tomkins graduated from Buena Vista High School. On January 6, 1947, he married Edith Rowe in Savannah, GA. He served in the Navy from 1943 until his retirement as a lieutenant commander in 1971. He had been a munitions officer and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. While participating in numerous organizations, he was past president of the Sons of Norway Oslo Lodge 35 in Bremerton; a member of Blue Lodge 98 in Port Orchard; a member and past grand high priest (state of Washington) with the York Rite Bodies of Bremerton; a member of Sojourners in Bremerton; a member of Heroes of '76 in Bremerton; and a recipient of the Order of the Purple Cross. Mr. Tomkins is survived by his wife, Edith of Port Orchard; a son, Rod Tomkins and his wife, Sue, of Gaithersburg, MD; a daughter, Linda Leano and her husband, Jess, of San Diego; a sister, Irma Perschbacher, of Salida, CO; four grandchildren, Heather, Nathan, Kyle and Trevor Tomkins; and one great-grandson, Ayden Harold Tomkins. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. A funeral service will be Thursday, January 8, 2004, 10AM, at Rill Chapel's Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Bremerton.
