On September 10th 2017 the world lost an amazing woman, Helen Lois Smith. Helen was born on April 17, 1934 in Alamo, ND to Mathilda and Gunnar Kvande. She was the 10th of 12 children.
Although born into a farming family, Helen knew early on she wanted to continue her education after high school. She attended on year at Minot University and then accepted a position as a country school teacher. As soon as she was able she went back to college, this time at Northern Montana College in Havre. She graduated with her teaching certificate in 1955 and accepted a position in Vida, MT.
On a visit to see family in Washington State she met and fell in love with Victor B. Smith. They were married on June 4, 1956 and so her teaching career in Washington began. Helen and Victor had 3 children, Edward Duane, Brian Douglas and Cheryl Lynn. In 1977 a tragic accident took Vic from her.
But Helen's love of life and all it had to offer allowed her to love again, this time with Luis Robert Romo. This was to be her companion, love and best friend for the next 38 years. Helen loved the opportunity to add to her family, not only Louie but his two children, Roberta and Mark. Her life was filled with family, horses, camping, dancing, music, canning, sewing, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, vacations, Norwegian heritage and Mexican traditions.
Helen is survived by her love Louie Romo. Children Edward Smith, Brian Smith and Cheryl (Reed) Burchard, Roberta McCade, and Mark (Kim) Romo. Ten grandchildren, Skyler (Nikki) Burchard, Leslie (Ryan) Severson, Zach Burchard, Kailey Burchard, Gunnar Smith, Kelsey Romo, Antonio Romo, Theodore McCade, Angelic McCade and Gabriel McCade. Seven great-grandchildren, Dylan, Shayla, Auriane, Blake, Macie, Lincoln, and Bennett. Brother Clarence Kvande and Sister Bernice (Ervin) Eid.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Victor, six brothers, Alvin, Trygve, Herman, Gordon, Erling and Selmer. Three sisters, Malinda, Verna, and Florence. And two grandchildren, Shalynn Burchard and Joshua Smith.
