Herbert L Downing, age 80, died Dec. 23, 1999 in Bremerton, WA. He was born Feb. 1, 1919 in Saffel, Arkansas to William & Sarah (Adams) Downing. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. Mr. Downing served on the U.S.S. Nevada at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese hit in December 1941. He served in the Pacific all through WWII. He spent two years of duty after the war in Japan, and one in Adak, Alaska in 1947. He made a trip to supply the D.E.W. line in the Arctic in 1955. He spent five years of duty in Kodiak, AK and retired from duty there. Mr. Downing filled a dream in Kodiak by taking up flying, he was also a game warden. He enjoyed fishing and hunting to his hearts content. He is survived by his son P. Michael Downing of Kodiak, AK., daughter Janet R. Hintz of Bremerton, WA., brother R.A. Downing of Arkansas, sisters Pauline Cunningham of Mississippi, Wanda Krshul of Missouri, grandchildren Thomas, Lisa, Lara, Christy, and numerous nieces and nephews.
