James L Bratcher

September 1, 1938 — January 29, 2014

James L. Bratcher, 75, passed peacefully on January 29, 2014 at Harrison Memorial Hospital due to cardiac complications resulting from a long fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family, and joined in hand with his loving wife Jolene (Ives) of 19 years.
Born to Lewis & Lyda Kennedy in Kinston, NC on Sept 1, 1938; Jim was raised in nearby Moorehead City before enlisting as a submariner in the US Navy at the young age of 16. Serving ashore, and aboard the USS Lafayette, he spent 30+ years proudly serving his country as an Electronics Technician, 1st Class; earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and multiple Good Conduct Medals in the process. A proud “Navy Man”, Jim was a member of the American Legion until his death.
Following his honorable discharge in June of 1985, Jim relocated to the Spokane area where he found success as an electrician and designer for American Sign Inc, and Indicator Sign Company. Designing and installing many notable electronic signs throughout WA, ID and MT; the electronic scoreboard at the WSU football stadium can also trace its roots to him.
Upon retiring from the sign industry, Jim relocated to Port Orchard where he met, and married Jolene in 1995. Sharing a love of entertainment, travel, and Native American culture; they could often be found enjoying a show, buffet, or some blackjack at any number of local casinos. When at home, he took great pleasure in his many landscaping projects, playing his guitar, reading, and catching a Mariners game whenever he could stand to watch them. He was an avid Seahawks fan. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a brother serving in Korea; and a son whose disappearance in a Grays Harbor marine accident remains a mystery to this day. He is survived by his loving wife Jolene R. Bratcher of Port Orchard; stepchildren Troy Rauter and Sheryl Miller; and grandchildren Kees, Chase, and Natasha; of Spokane area.
Services will be held at the Port Orchard Eagles February 8, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Cancer Society in James L. Bratcher’s name.
