With deep sadness, we share the August 12, 2022 passing of James Raymond Burton.
Jim was born in Seattle on May 4th 1956. He grew up on Mercer Island and graduated from Mercer Island High School in the class of 1974. During those years, his father and mother introduced the kids to backpacking to the lakes in the high mountains of the Cascades, swimming in Lake Washington, clam digging at Copalis Beach, and preparing wonderful family meals. As a young man, Jim studied at Seattle Community College, and the Culinary Institute of America.
Jim enjoyed working at various restaurants. He worked in management for the Washington Liquor Control Board and the warehouse in the state prison at Monroe. He operated equipment in farming and various excavation jobs. The job he loved the most was as lead driver for Emerald Heights Retirement Community. Being well diversified in his talents, Jim also had his own business; Jim Handys. He retired and called himself, “Chief Executive Officer at ‘I work hard at doing nothing all day.’” The truth is Jimmy never ceased celebrating life.
Jim was accomplished in many areas and was known as a walking encyclopedia. As a Master Chef Jim loved to prepare, share, and enjoy great food. He was a pilot of small aircraft. He loved to be on the water and was involved in many sailing events. As an outdoorsman he also loved camping and fishing.
Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother Arthur and Lorraine Burton, brother Rickey Burton, and sister Mary Ellen.
Jim was a devoted and loving husband to Susan, his wife of 23 years. He was also survived by his sister Becky. Other family members include brothers-in-law Tom Schmuck, Dave Flieder and wife Rhonda, Bill Flieder and wife Dee, sister-in-law Christine Evans, and numerous nieces and nephews for which he was caring to all.
A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
