James R. Dones "Colorado Jim" died in Port Orchard, Washington October 5, 2002 following a long battle with cancer. He was 73.He was born August 23, 1929 in Longmont, Colorado to Henry and Susan Dones.He graduated from Olatha High School of Olatha, Colorado in 1946.James served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1966 - serving as a Chief Petty Officer. He served 20 years - retiring in 1966.He worked as a Planner and Estimator for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Public Works for 17 years - retiring in 1984.James raised, trained, judged and showed horses; was an avid fisherman; was a Yuma County Search and Rescue Member of the year 1997. His greatest passion during his later years was his membership in the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) where he was an outstanding shooter in his category of elder statesman and won many 1st place awards including Western States Championship.He is survived by his wife Dorthea M. (Voellger) Dones of Yuma, Arizona and Port Orchard, Washington; step-son Brad Nielens of Seattle, Washington; daughters - Desiree Dones of Gig Harbor, Washington & Susan Dones of Puyallup, Washington; Step-daughters Shelley George of Vashon, Washington & Paula Nielens, of Yuma, Arizona; grandchildren (5): James Norton, Ryan Morton, Dustin Rosas, Lindsey Pierre and Cameron Rosas. She was preceded in death by brother - Robert Dones.A memorial service will be held October 12, 2002, 1:00 p.m., at Rill Chapel, 1151 Mitchell Ave., Port Orchard, Washington.
