James H. Scriven, 93 of Port Orchard, died in Gig Harbor on November 7, 2015. James grew up on a farm in Macon County, Missouri. He was a very simple and independent man who finished everything he started. He was married to his wife Helyne for 40 years.
James spent 30 years in the medical field in the US Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Radford his first three years and it was a special experience in his life. Among his favorite stories was the time he lead troops up Mount Fuji in Okinawa, Japan with a cane, which was marked at every check station. He also went on several rescue missions to recover fellow sailors and fighter pilots.
In his retirement, James enjoyed working in the dirt, growing vegetables and flowers. He particularly like to grow Roses and Iris’s, along with blueberries and raspberries and others. His favorite were the flowers. He also loved building fishing poles and rebuilding reels. His favorite place to spend time was sitting in the yard with his dog Boomer at his feet. He enjoyed going to the waterfront every day, several times. He always talked about the ships that were docked there.
James was a very truthful man. He loved his pets – his very favorite dog of all time was his poodle GiGi. He was very particular and used to say “Do it right the first time for keep your cotton picking mitts off”. And he would have no part of cell phones or other electronic devices!
We will honor his life at 9:30 am on Friday, November 20, 2015 with a Graveside Service at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
