Jason Ray Smith

July 27, 1983 — December 1, 2014

Jason Ray Smith passed away on December 1, 2014 after a hard-fought battle with pneumonia at 31 years old. He was born in Redmond, Washington to Mike and Wanda Smith on July 27th, 1983. He is survived by his parents, Sister Jessica and Brother-in-law Darence Shine, Foster Brother Christian Whetstone, and Nephew Tyus Shine, along with many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and good friends, particularly his best friend of many years, Reid Zimmer.
Jason was born with a gleam in his eye and a joy for life. All people were his friends and he loved teasing everyone. He was blessed with a child-like wonder for life and always looked forward to the next holiday or event with great excitement and enjoyment. He loved vacations to Disneyland, singing karaoke, rooting for the Seahawks and Mariners, planning his costumes for Halloween, bowling, and hanging out with his friends. Jason’s most cherished treasure is his stick & rope.
Jason moved to Port Orchard in June of 1986 and became a meaningful part of the community. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 2004, and worked in food services at PSNS for 12 years. He also volunteered with the Bremerton YMCA and the Retsil Veteran’s home, and participated in the Elder and Adult Family program. He loved going to day and overnight camps for special populations, where he entertained everyone with his on-stage antics at talent shows and events. One of the biggest parts of his life was his participation in Special Olympics sports. He began with softball when he was 9 years old, and eventually played sports year-round including soccer, softball, bowling, track / field and basketball, earning countless medals along the way.
He was well known and loved by so many. His family and friends will miss him more than can be expressed, and will always keep Jason in our hearts. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 on Saturday, December 13 at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard, followed by a reception. Donations in Jason’s name can be made to Special Olympics, Hollyridge Adult Employment Center.
