Jennie Dorothea Petersen of Port Orchard, died Friday, November 30, 2001 in Bremerton, Washington. She would have been 92 years old on Saturday, December 1,2001.She was born in her grandmother's house near Kristiansand, Norway to Peter E. and Johanne L.(Larsen) Petersen. At age four, she traveled by ship to the United States with her mother. Jennie and her mother and father lived for a while in a tent in the Belfair area while her father worked in timber and for the county. They moved to their Dogwood Road property in 1919, into an old farm house, later building a new house on the same property in 1927.She attended South Kitsap High School, graduating in 1928, and from Wilson's Modern Business College in Seattle in 1930.She was hired in June, 1942, at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, and worked in the Rigger Shop as a typist and retired from the same Shop as a Supervisory Clerk on June 29, 1973. She also worked part-time in Seattle and helped on the family farm prior to being hired in the Shipyard. While she was employed in the Shipyard, she received the Meritorious Civilian Award on August 1, 1952, and a Certificate of Commendation on September 4, 1968.Jennie was a life-long member of the First Lutheran Church of Port Orchard.Jennie enjoyed working with her flowers and vegetable gardens. She also enjoyed baking cookies(especially Spritz) for the holdiays and her Church bake sales. She especially loved spending time with her family.She is survived by a brother, Gerald Petersen of Silverdale, Washington; nephew, James R. Petersen and wife, Bonnie, of Ellensburg, Washington; niece, Janet E. Berry and husband, Doug, of Bremerton; great-niece, Joelle A. Lovestedt and husband, Art, of Bellevue, Washington; great-nephew, Craig V. Berry of Bremerton; great-niece Gretchen A. Wippel of Ellensburg; and cousins in Norway. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Colbert H. Petersen.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, December 6, 2001 at the First Lutheran Church on Mitchell Avenue in Port Orchard. The Pastor Allen Cudahy will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard. A reception at the church will follow the funeral.The family suggests that contributions in her memory be sent to the First Lutheran Church(Memorial Fund), 2483 Mitchell Avenue, Port Orchard, Washington, 98366.All arrangements are under direction of Rill Chapel, Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home.
