Jerry Dean Crabb passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 31, 2023. He was 76 years old.
Jerry grew up in rural Collins, Iowa. The middle child of 5 boys, he attended Collins High School, where he played basketball and served as salutatorian and homecoming king of his high school class. He attended Grandview College and Iowa State University before joining the Navy at the age of 20.
While stationed in the Philippines, he met the love of his life, Linda, and in 1970 they were married. His career in the navy took his family to San Diego, back to the Philippines, and ultimately to the Pacific Northwest, which became their permanent home. He served aboard the USS Constellation and Squadron 155 on Whidbey Island before retiring from the Navy in 1989.
Jerry started his second career as a Public Benefits Specialist in 1990, and spent the next 20 years helping families lift themselves out of poverty via social service programs at Washington Department of Social and Health Services. When he retired in 2010, he decided he was not yet done helping people, and spent several years volunteering for Orchard Heights elementary School and Retsil Veterans home.
Jerry was a man of faith, and he was actively involved in the community at Port Orchard United Methodist Church. He taught bible study, mentored young people, and sang in the church choir. Jerry never hesitated to volunteer his time or resources to help others. Jerry also prided himself in being physically active, having trained and competed in many races and marathons.
He is remembered as a kind and gentle man with a friendly smile and a mischievous sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda, his daughters Ruth, Geraldine, and Christine; and his grandchildren Amber, Celeste, Sloane, Wesley, and PJ, and his great grandson Finn.
Jerry was a bright light, a dear friend, a protector of his loved ones. He will be missed.
A memorial service for Jerry will be held at Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center at 12:00 PM on Saturday, April 15 2023 in Port Orchard, WA.
