Jerry B. King of Port Orchard passed away quietly on November 26 at his home following a more than 20 year battle with cancer. He was 81. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sharron, of the family home.
Jerry was born November 13, 1933 to James Brent King and Frances Louise King in Brownfield, Texas. He attended schools there and graduated from Brownfield High School in 1950. He received his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering from Texas Tech in Lubbock in 1957. He worked for the Texas Soil Conservation Division for a few years, moved on to Gifford Hill Products in Lubbock and was then transferred to Spokane, WA, where he met and later married Sharron. They moved to Gig Harbor in 1984 and to Port Orchard in 1988. During that time, Jerry’s career took him to Premier Industries of Tacoma, where he served as the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Manager until his retirement in 2003 at age 70.
Jerry was the founding president of the Lubbock Soccer Association and a long-time member of the American Society for Testing Materials. He was an active member of Kitsap Lake Baptist Church in Bremerton where he served as a Sunday School teacher, and was ordained there as a deacon in 2006. He was an avid reader, enjoyed working in his yard, traveling and being with family.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy, his daughter Tanya King Melton and granddaughter Amber Melton. Survivors include his wife, son Brent King (Barbara), Spokane, WA; step daughter Teri L. Hughes of Coulee City, WA; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one niece and two nephews.
A memorial service is planned for January 10, 2015 at 2 PM at Kitsap Lake Baptist Church in Bremerton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Franciscan Hospice or to the prostate cancer research unit at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
