Cancer never conquered his spirit. The youngest child of William B and Marie Baumgartner Ackman, Jim was born May 25, 1944 in Norfolk, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm near Oakdale, Nebraska and attended Antelope County Public Schools in Nebraska. During high school he worked on farms and briefly drove semi’s. He served in the Navy coming home a decorated Viet Nam War Veteran and served in the Reserve until 1969. Jim married Dorothy Mavis in 1964. They lived in Florida for 2 years before settling in Olalla, Washington. There he was a volunteer firefighter and member of the community club where he made many unsung contributions to family, community and country. Jim retired from PSNS as an electrician and ship scheduler after 29+years and moved to Silverdale, Washington. He is missed by his wife Dorothy; son John; daughters Michelle Olvera & Susie (Bill) Ringel; grandchildren Joshua, Brandon, Breanna, Sara, Daniel, Mierissa, Mariah & Tiffany; great grandchild Trinity; brothers Dick (Annette) from NE, Joe (Rose) from WI; many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his brothers William, John and Francis. Jim’s strong, quiet support of his family and friends never faltered. Although he left the farm, he never left farming and could be seen on his John Deere Tractor doing various jobs around the property. He had a “special” relationship taking care of family vehicles. Jim had a vast knowledge of machinery, nature and rocks. He could turn the plainest rock into a beautiful piece of jewelry. A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00AM, June 28 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton, Washington. Inurnment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. Thanks to the doctors, the medical staff, Rill Chapel, friends and family for their ongoing care and support during this difficult time.
