Joan Shields passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2017, at her home in Port Orchard, Washington.
A native of Washington State, Joan graduated from South Kitsap high school and attended Central Washington University. It was while on spring break she met Burt Shields, a native of Kendallville, Indiana and the love of her life. She and Burt returned to the community that meant so much to them and joined the family business: the Hannah and Powell pharmacies, which served Port Orchard families for decades. Her beloved son, Brad, was the third generation in the family to become a pharmacist and join the family business. He preceded her in death in 2011.
Joan and Burt continued the tradition begun by Joan's parents, Fred and Anna Hannah, and spent their lives in the small town on the bay, working at the drug stores, boating on the weekends, golfing, entertaining friends, bridge club, and joining in social and charitable endeavors. Joan maintained a long term commitment to the Children’s Hospital Guild Association and was one of the founders of the Sidney Art Gallery, helping to preserve local history and showcase both local and renowned artists.
She was a beautiful, elegant woman--always impeccably and fashionably dressed--who brought light and laughter to every room into which she walked. She will be missed by all who knew her, but especially by her loving family— daughter, Stephanie LaRiviere, son-in-law Rex Mayberry; grandsons, Lee and Jason LaRiviere; her brother, Benjamin Hannah, sister-in-law, Kristin Hannah; and her sister, Jerrie Carl.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
