John Tolan

March 20, 1933 — December 30, 2004

John Paul Tolan , 71, 0f Bremerton died December 30 of pancreatic cancer at the University of Washington Medical Center. Born in Fort Lewis to John Joseph and Dorothy Eunice (Dayton) Tolan, he graduated from Bremerton High School in 1951, later completing studies at Olympic College in Bremerton and earning a bachelor of arts in phychology from Western Washington University in 1960. On July 30, 1977, he married Marlene Garcia in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Tolan worked for 30 years as a human services professional and employment specialist for the developmentally disabled in Bremerotn, Coolidge, Arizona, and Phoenix. In Bremerton, he had been employed at the Holly Ridge Center and with Independent Employment Services. He will be remembered for his dedication to his work and "his interest in his clients' lives." He was particularly active with ARC of Kitsap County, having coordinated the organizations frequent dances on Perry Avenue. Mr. Tolan had also been a child welfare worker, a social worker, a publishing company representative, an instructor at Central Arizona College in Coolidge and owner and broker of John Tolan & Associates, a real estate, mortgage and insurance business in Phoenix. At the time of his death he was a registered naturopathic doctor, a certified holistic health practitioner and a member of the American Naturopathic Medical Association. He was a "voracious" reader who also anjoyed listening to Natinal Public Radio and jazz radio station KPLU, attending jazz and classical concerts, viewing independent films, taking brisk walks, drinking McDonalds's coffee, taking family excursions on Washington roads, philosophizing with his wife and daughter and keeping abreast of natural medical research. His brothers, Michael and Gerald Tolan, preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife; his daughter, Anna Maria Tolan of Bremerton and her son, Simon Anthony; a sister, Patricia Lund and her husband, Gayle, of Poulsbo; an aunt Breta Hembree of Arizona; and an uncle Darlow Dayton of Kodiak, Alaska. A rosary will be said at 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerotn with a reception following. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Vaughn Bay Cemetery on the Key Peninsula. Memorial donations may be made to ARC of Kitsap County, 3423 N. Perry Ave., Bremerotn, WA 98310.
