Joseph Rowe Hubert, Jr.
April 25, 1935 - December 2, 2012
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Joe Hubert passed away quietly on Sunday, December 2. An avid car enthusiast, Joe was known for his vast knowledge of General Motors vehicles and enjoyed many hours restoring old Chevys, Cadillacs and LaSalles. He was a charter member of the Port Orchard Saints Car Club and was active with the club until his death.
Joe was born on April 25, 1935 in Long Beach, CA to Joseph R. Hubert, Sr. and Elizabeth V. (Foltz) Hubert. His father was a career navy man and the family moved around the country during Joe's early childhood to Connecticut, Hawaii and finally to Port Orchard in 1947 where Joe lived for the remainder of his life. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1953 and served two years in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. In 1963, he married his wife of 49 years, Diane (Smith) Hubert. Together, they raised two daughters, Andrea and Susan.
Professionally, Joe was a technical illustrator for Boeing for 28 years before retiring in 1995. He also worked in the auto industry and as a house builder, having designed and built two homes for his family. In his earlier years, Joe loved to drag race at the Bremerton Speedway. He also was an enthusiastic fan of South Kitsap Football, rarely missing a game during the 1980s, 90s and 2000s. He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and enjoyed being active with his church community. Joe was known for his quick wit, sharp sense of humor, strong work ethic and gentle heart.
Joe is survived by his wife Diane of Port Orchard; his daughters Andrea Langley (Brian Lyman) of Port Orchard and Susan (Steve) Newsom of Tacoma; four grandchildren, Sarah and Jack Langley and Joey and Scott Newsom; his sister Ann Tolan of Shelton; nephew John (Charlene) Tolan of Bothell; and a large extended family, many who reside in Port Orchard. He is preceded in death by his parents and his cherished dog, Gracie.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held at noon on Saturday, December 8 at Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard. The family wishes to express gratitude to Franciscan Hospice for the exceptional care they provided to Joe over the past month. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Franciscan Hospice in Tacoma or South Kitsap Helpline.
