Joy Hoynes

February 27, 1934 — April 24, 2023

Joy Hoynes passed away on April 24, 2023 at home in Silverdale, Washington at the
age of 89. She was born on February 27, 1934 in Hamilton, Montana to Dave and Betty
Hope.
Joy grew up in Hamilton and while attending the University of Montana in Missoula,
met the love of her life, Emmet Hoynes. They were married in Missoula in March 1955
and made their first home in San Antonio, Texas where Emmet was training for the army
medical corps. Emmet was sent to Landstuhl, Germany and Joy joined him soon after.
While living in Germany, Joy and Emmet loved to travel whenever Emmet got leave.
Their first child, Mark, was born in Landstuhl.
After returning to the states in 1956, the family eventually settled in Pasco,
Washington and added a daughter, Lisa, and two more sons, Sean and Pat to the
family. The family moved to Seattle and then to Bremerton. Joy was a stay-at-home
mom for many years and then went back to school and got an Associates Degree in
computer science at a time when computers used punch cards and took up a whole
room. Joy played the organ at Our Lady Star of the Sea church in Bremerton and later
took a job teaching piano lessons and music classes at Our Lady Star of the Sea
school. She also led her daughter’s Camp Fire group for many years. She cooked,
baked, canned, made jelly, and sewed for her family.
In 1972, Joy and Emmet had a house built and finished the insides themselves. Joy
did a lot of texturing, painting, staining, and numerous other tasks to help finish the
house.
Joy planned and hosted many gatherings and celebrations for family and friends
including holiday dinners, 12th Night parties, birthday dinners, spaghetti dinners, and a
3-day cousin reunion for Emmet’s family. She also planned many family trips and
vacations. She and Emmet loved to learn about other places and people. They visited
over half the states and traveled to more than thirty countries on five continents.
Besides her family, Joy loved birds, music, flowers, traveling, reading, working on
many crafts and applesauce.
Joy was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, her oldest son, her parents
and her half sister, Barbara. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa, sons Sean (Schelie)
and Pat, daughter-in-law Sharon, grandchildren Emily, Katie (Ben), Zach, Devin, step
grandchildren Kyle, Aaron, Katie, Andrés, AJ, great-grandson Taron, step greatgrandchildren Cooper and Willa, brother David (Kathy), nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Central Kitsap Food Bank
