Our beloved Ken went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014. Born in Eugene, OR on Aug. 1, 1929, Ken was the middle son of Lionel and Dorothy (Daigh) Lawrence. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1947 and was active at Harper Evangelical Free Church throughout his youth. He played the baritone horn in the SKHS band and at various church functions. After high school, Ken attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (seminary) in Chicago, IL, fulfilling his dream of becoming a pastor and serving God. He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Powers, who partnered with him in ministry for 54 years. Together they raised six children.
Ken served churches in Loomis, NE, Petaluma and Felton, CA, Surrey, B.C., Canada, and Tumwater, WA, the majority of his active ministry being spent in Canada (35 years). He pastored at Johnston Heights Evangelical Free Church and Cloverdale Evangelical Free Church in Surrey, B.C. He became the District Superintendent for the Prairie District in Alberta, Canada, and later in the Lower Pacific District of British Columbia, a role in which he traveled extensively bringing encouragement, support and leadership to hundreds of pastors and churches across Western Canada.
In 2005, after being widowed, Ken married Carolyn Powers and moved to Port Orchard, WA. Together they have actively served at Christ the Rock Community Church.
Ken’s hobbies were woodworking, camping in his RV, and gardening. His children, grandchildren, and many friends remember him as a man of humor, insight, wisdom, and practical know-how. He was a gentle spirit, leaving a spirit of hope and the fragrance of Christ behind him wherever he went.
Ken is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his children—Debbie Wiens (Doug) of Langley, B.C., Canada, Deanna Van Elswyk (Kevin) of Chester Springs, PA, Dottie Clogg (Rob) of Sioux Falls, SD, Dan Lawrence (Chris) of Portland, OR, Don Lawrence (Shelley) of Cloverdale, B.C., Canada, and Doug Lawrence (Arlyn) of Gig Harbor, WA—and 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed yet our hope and excited anticipation is to see him again someday!
A memorial service will be held Thurs., Feb. 6th, at 2 p.m. at Christ the Rock Community Church in Port Orchard.
