Larry Lynn Hinton was born September 29, 1939 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Lacy and Geurada Strunk Hinton. He attended High school there and helped out at his parents restaurant, The Burger Inn until he joined the United States Navy after graduation.
He served honorably for twenty-two years, achieving the rank of Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate. Larry was transferred into the Fleet Reserve from his final duty Station, the Naval Torpedo Station, Keyport, Washington in 1978. After his time in the Navy, Larry took to the seas again, this time with Merchant Marines out of Seattle where he served for 31 years eventually becoming Captain of several vessels over those years. It is apparent that once you get the sea in your veins, it doesn’t come out easily.
He met Yoshika Sato while she was working in what became his favorite restaurant in Yokahama, Japan. They dated for a couple of years and were married June 25, 1964. He and his sweetheart were married for 57 years.
When ever possible, he enjoyed spending time with his family at family reunions and other gatherings. He loved to travel but mostly to two places; to Japan and to his hometown in Ottumwa. He also enjoyed traveling to Canada with the family. He also enjoyed fishing when ever and where ever he could make the time to do so.
He passed away in hospice care at the Retsil Veteran’s Home in Port Orchard, WA on September 17, 2020 after beating cancer, but the affects weakened his body and a series of illnesses eventually took him from us.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lacy and Guerada Hinton, brother Karle Hinton and his grandparents.
He is survived by his loving wife Yoshiko; sister Bette (Lynn) Edgington of Keller, TX; brothers Gary (Julie) of Eddyville, IA, and Bill (Denise) of Bloomfield, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.
