Lawrence William Saul

December 18, 1936 — March 18, 2023

On March 18, 2023, Lawrence “Bill” Saul passed away in Bremerton, Washington at the age of 87.

Born December 18, 1936, to Nobel and Vanda Saul, Bill grew up the oldest of seven children. In 1955, at age 19, Bill left Christopher, Illinois and enlisted in the Airforce where he served for 4 years. In 1964, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy and while proudly serving his country he traveled the world. His service took him to the Philippines where he met his wife, Victoria Mahinay. His life forever changed after walking into Victoria’s bar, Vicky’s Place, and meeting his future wife for the first time. The two married after 7 months and embarked on a beautiful life together.

Bill’s military service brought the couple to Kitsap County where they put roots down in Port Orchard with their daughter, Cherlyn. During his 16-year tenure with the U.S. Navy, Bill was recognized as one of the first 500 to receive a Master at Arms rate. In October 1980, Bill retired from the U.S. Navy but kept busy with post-retirement work at the Jackson Park Naval Hospital and community service. Bill believed in his community and gave back through his memberships at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and the Port Orchard Eagles. You could always find Bill wearing a hat (often Mariners) from his robust collection or a t-shirt sporting the jersey number of one of his granddaughters. Bill unabashedly adored his family and was fearless in celebrating accomplishments both great and small.

Though quiet, Bill found great joy in gatherings that brought extended family together. The moments where family, laughter, music, and Filipino cuisine collided often blossomed into enduring memories for Bill and his family. While festivities brought happiness, Bill’s time with Victoria offered him peace. He cherished gardening with his wife and concluding a hard day’s work with a glass of cold iced tea on the porch. Bill and Victoria embodied partnership whether they were traveling internationally, visiting National Parks, or basking in a pristine Pacific Northwest summer day. The duo shared a special bond for 56 years that touched all who had the gift to witness it.

Bill is survived by his wife, Victoria; daughter and son-in-law, Cherlyn and Dean Milne; and granddaughters Stephanie Milne-Lane (Josh Lane) and Sarah Milne (Brad Fairweather).
