Leona Mae Zukowski

August 15, 1926 — April 16, 2016

Leona Mae Zukowski, 89, of Port Orchard, WA, passed away on Saturday morning, April 16, 2016 in the family home of her daughter, where she has been living for over 4 years.

She was born in Las Animas, Colorado, 4th child out of 9, to parents Stephen and Daisy Cavanaugh.

Leona was 11 when the family moved to Yakima, WA. Leona worked hard from the time she was 15 years old., working as a waitress, a shoe salesman, an ironer at a laundry, packed fruit, also worked at Boeing and Todd Shipyard . Stanley Zukowski used to be a neighbor in Yakima, and a friend of her brother. He wanted to have a date with Leona, they hit it off right away and were married March 16, 1946. They were married almost 68 years. Stan passed away January 2014.

Leona helped open the first St. Vincent thrift store in Port Orchard. She donated a lot of time there over the years., along with Stan. That was a very important part of their lives.

Leona has one sister living, Pauline Conrad of Klamath Falls, OR. The rest of her family has preceded her in death. Leona and Stan raised 5 children Kenneth (Holly), Dianne (Mike) Sumter, David Zukowski, Karen (Steve) Kosel, Joy (Dave) Brookbank.

Leona has 12 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.

Leona was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, friend. She will be greatly missed.
