Leonard Miles Hembd was born March 24, 1941 in Los Angeles, California to Leo Miles Hembd and Lois May (Geasland) Hembd. He was raised in Port Orchard, Washington attending South Kitsap schools, and graduating in June, 1959. Following graduation, Len began his career in the Army. First as a cook and then in communications. He retired in June, 1983, after 22 years and 2 months, having received the Bronze Star. His overseas assignments included Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and Thailand. Stateside, he was assigned to California, New Jersey, Maryland and Georgia. Following Army retirement, Len worked as a bus mechanic for the South Kitsap School District for 21 years.
On March 29, 1964, Len married Marylee Stow in Port Orchard, Washington. They had been married 57 years when he passed away February 4, 2022.
Len played viola and was very involved in the local music community. Beginning in the mid 1980’s he became a member of both the Bremerton and Bainbridge Island Symphonies. He was also a member of the Colvos Passage and Duncan Creek String Quartets.
Len is survived by his wife, Marylee, of Port Orchard, Washington; Son Darren Hembd (Pavlina) of Bremerton, Washington; Daughter Lisa McGill (Justin) of Bremerton, Washington; Sister Marylin Wasson of New York; Brother Albert Hembd (Sumi) of Port Orchard, WA; Cousin Richard Geasland (Claudia) of Port Orchard, WA; and five grandchildren – Walter, Liam, Holdenn, Dakota, and Kairi. He was predeceased by his parents Leo and Lois Hembd, Step-mother Doris Hembd, son Lawrence and Grandson Konner Dennison-Hembd.
Memorial service to be April 23, 2022, 1pm at Church of the Nazarene, 4647 Sidney Road, Port Orchard, Washington, 98367.
